THE ULTRAMAN IN ME

I am sure everyone knows Ultraman or had at least seen or heard this Japanese comical hero. Conceived in the early 1940s and was very popular during the 70s and 80s when television gained prominence. Now he is still popular today but faces fiercer competition from other manga heroes and heroines.

Ultraman is a symbol of righteousness and truth. An icon synonymous with good triumphs over evil. He was my hero during my childhood and still is. Back then I used to role play Ultraman vs Monster with my friends. Nobody wanted to be the evil monster. We fought for the “right” to be Ultraman with scissors and stones… the kids’ ways of course.

Today’s world is full of monsters, big and small. Murder, robbery, kidnapping, rapes and snatch thefts are almost daily news.

Smaller monsters may be more of a nuisance but not necessarily less harmful like the legendary “Mat Rempit”, road bullies, queue jumpers and unfriendly service staff and the list goes on.
I wish Ultraman would fly to our rescue. Secretly… sheepishly I wish I could be Ultra man…
And take down these monsters…
With his trademark fighting stances…

Of course we remember that “light bulb” on his chest flickers incessantly (which means his ultra power will diminish soon and he needs to finish off his enemy fast).
Finally he unleashes his secret weapon (Ya lor.. I know he should use it in the first place but hey it’s still comic after all la).

The monster is defeated.

Our hero saves the day.

Yeah!

I believe deep down there is a Ultraman in each of us. All kids (well almost all) wanted to be Ultraman but strangely and unfortunately some grew up to be monsters. How can we be so cold and uncivilised?
Even Ultraman has a mother to guide him (I just got to know this too! And she's a looker)

I think most of us need to so some soul searching and learn from our kids.
How shameful.
