A Tribute to Leslie Cheung

Two days ago marks the 6th anniversary of the death of a pop legend, Leslie Cheung. Leslie or famously known as “Gor Gor” (big brother in Cantonese) leapt to his death at Hong Kong’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel on April 1, 2003 after a hard fought battle with depression.

Although Leslie Cheung passed away six years ago at age 46, it seems this late Hong Kong pop legend will never be forgotten as fans from all over the world held various memorial services and paid tribute in remembrance of their beloved late idol.

Leslie was considered a phenomenal Hong Kong performer and he captured the hearts of fans with his artistic talent and charisma either on stage or off the screen. At the height of his popularity, he was worshipped by thousands of young girls. To this day his fan club remains popular and there are many other sites are dedicated to him.

Leslie Cheung was born in Kowloon, Hong Kong. In 1977 after Leslie returned to Hong Kong from UK, he took part in the Asian Music Contest held by Rediffusion Television (RTV) and won second prize. He did not have an easy career path and only began to shoot to superstardom in the mid 1980s.

As a kid, I remembered listening to his “The Wind Blows On” (Fung Gai Juk Chui in Cantonese)on my cassette player (ok la, maybe some of you are young enough not to know this dinosaur equipment) and it still remains my favourite Leslie's song. I was truly captivated by his alluring voice. To me, there’s no replacement for this spectacular singer.
I hope his songs will continue to linger in the hearts of those who adore and deeply miss Leslie.
